Mobilink and Warid Confirm of Merge

VimpelCom, a parent company of Mobilink, and the Abu Dhabi Group of Warid telecom, are in final stages on a deal for a merge of two networks in early 2016.


Mobilink was in talks with Warid telecom Abu Dhabi Group since last several months.

Mobilink is interested in the 4G technology of Warid telecom and is planing on launching 4G and 3G for both Warid and Mobilink customers.

Mobilink is without 4G license and Warid is without 3G license.

Abu Dhabi will keep about 30% shares in Warid telecom.

Mobilink subscribers base will increase with combined Mobilink and Warid customers.

Mobilink and Warid are expected to make official announcement in January 2016 regarding merger. While officials have refused to comment on the deal yet calling it “rumours or speculation”.

Mobilink will not change name of Warid initially.

Telenor Norway group holds 33% shares in VimpelCom of Mobilink. Now Telenor also owns Warid telecom through VimpelCom.

05-October-2015: Telenor group announced to return VimpelCom shares on 5 October 2015. Telenor will no longer have any shares in VimpelCom.

27-October-2015: Both companies have announced merge. Both companies will become one. Warid and Mobilink both customers will be able to enjoy 3G and 4G services.

    “Decrease in number of cellular companies will decrease cellular market competition in Pakistan.”

    And it will suffer the consumers from all sides.

      Pakistan government should add new cellular networks to the market. Soon.
